Mission Statement

East by Northeast reflects the Chinese-style food we serve with a focus on New England’s palette of local ingredients.  Offering something both familiar and exciting, we look to the past with recipes rooted in tradition and to the future by giving those recipes a fresh perspective.  Despite harsh northeast winters, we will strive to support local farms, above all committing to sourcing the best-quality ingredients.  Respect for the products, culinary traditions, and the customer are our highest priorities.

Chef Phillip Tang

Cooking has always been a part of my life, but it wasn’t until my fourth year at the University of Virginia, when I found myself frequently cooking the Chinese recipes learned from my family that I wanted to make it my career.  After graduation, I enrolled at L’academie de Cuisine, a French cooking school, outside of Washington, DC.  I graduated top of my class there and never looked back.  I have been lucky enough to work with many acclaimed chefs whom influenced and shaped my ideas of food and cooking.  My time cooking at Cashion’s Eat Place in Washington DC, Lumiere, TW Food, and most recently Hungry Mother, honed my culinary skills and inspired me to open my own establishment.  Although my culinary training was traditional French, cooking the Chinese food that reminds me of family is what satisfies me.  Whenever I return to my parents’ home in McLean, Virginia, my first stop is always my family’s restaurant, A&J.  This is the food that shaped my culinary career and is my strongest inspiration. Noodles, dumplings, and refreshing small plates are the food I love to eat and cook.  While cooking at TW Food I finally felt ready to realize my dream so I took a month long trip to Taiwan, working in the restaurant of one of Taipei’s finest hotels, visiting my grandfather, an amazing cook in his own right, and tasting the remarkable food Taiwan had to offer.  When I returned to Boston I worked at Hungry Mother while starting the process of opening my own restaurant.  With the encouragement and support of family and friends, my dream of opening East by Northeast is now a reality.
